DMI Calibration Service

Dimensional Measurement (DMI) offers a wide array of A2LA accredited calibration services, which can be performed in our lab or on-site at your facility.  DMI possesses the knowledge and tools necessary to expertly certify precision hand gages, set up tools, and a wide variety of dimensional measuring tools.

The following is a small sample gages that DMI is accredited to certify:

Micrometers
Rules
Depth Gages
Angle Plates
Set-up (1,2,3) Blocks
Straight Edges

Dial Indicators
Precision Balls
Height Gages
Pin Gages
V-Blocks
Surface Roughness Patches

Calipers
Squares
Bore Gages
Plug Gages
Ring Gages
Profilometers

In addition, DMI offers accredited certification for custom fixtures and in-process gaging. Our dimensional calibration service for these custom gages frequently requires only the part print.   From that information, our experienced metrologists can perform reverse engineering on the gage and determine its conformance to the part’s requirements.

We have the capability to perform complex dimensional calibration and inspection of fixtures using the part drawings, part CAD models, design specifications, sketches, or simply a description of the gage’s intended use.

Almost universally, accredited gage certification is now required for all quality systems. DMI’s metrologists will not only provide this gage calibration, but will assess the condition of the gage and identify any issues that may affect its usefulness.  Any gage repairs that may be needed can also frequently be sourced through DMI.

As mentioned above, we offer both on-site gage calibration of standard gages and hand tools, and also on-site dimensional calibration of specialized equipment and gages.

However, due to the limitations of portable equipment and varying environmental conditions, please contact us to discuss your particular needs so that a successful course of action can be provided.

Laser and Video for Part Inspection or Revese Engineering

Dimensional Measurement, Inc. (DMI) offers a variety of vision inspection and non contact inspection services, which are useful in measuring free-form parts and become necessary when measuring flexible or fragile parts.  Depending upon the part submitted and the required data output, we can utilize the equipment that best suits your application – or combine our capabilities to produce the desired final result.   These services include:

  • 3D Laser Scanning
  • Reverse Engineering Services
  • Camera based Vision Inspection

Non Contact Inspection:

Faro Laser Scanner

3D Laser Scanning or Laser Digitizing utilizes a beam of laser light to capture the physical shape of the subject part, and produces a digital image, or point cloud.  Laser digitizing is among the most versatile non contact inspection services because it is highly portable, suitable for a wide range of part sizes, and capable of obtaining a
large amount of data.  Laser Scanning can also be used in tandem with DMI’s contact CMM measurement methods to create reverse engineering solutions that neither measurement method can provide on its own.  DMI’s 3D laser scanning services can be performed either at our facility in Wixom, Michigan, or our metrologists can come to your
facility, which is exceptionally helpful for large or sensitive parts.

Laser Scanning created Color Map

The 3D Laser scanning process can provide either 3D or 2D (cross section) results to compare scanned parts to their CAD models.  A 3D comparison provides a color map of the CAD model displaying deviations between the 3D model and the physical part.  A 2D comparison provides a whisker plot and deviations shown by both color and length of the whisker.  Both provide a very complete picture of the
part’s condition.

X-Centric Video CMM

Another important non contact inspection method is camera-based vision inspection, also commonly referred to as video inspection or optical CMM inspection. This method is best suited to thin or soft parts, or to items that cannot be probed easily, such as a very small inspection can be extended to include features that are resistant to other inspection methods by using an impression or casting compound to mold the area, then inspecting the mold of the part.

Typical Application-Faro Arm inspecting a Large Part

DMI will come to you !

With our Faro portable CMM arms, our Metrology Technician will come to your facility to inspect your parts saving you both time and money ! The Faro portable arm is renowned as a portable CMM as a multi-axis measurement arm that has the flexibility to take measurements where you need them. Designed specifically for use on the production floor the Faro Arm is constructed with the highest quality aircraft materials, aiding in temperature stability as well as durability.

A portable CMM the Faro Arm is easily set up wherever its inspection capabilities are needed. Patented internal temperature compensation corrects for environmental temperature changes to eliminate performance problems typically found in traditional measurement devices when used in less than perfect environments.

Typical Portable Arm Applications

  • Large components which are too large for conventional CMM’s
  • Components too large or inconvenient to transport
  • Measuring while the large component is still on the machine
  • Fixture verification and calibration
  • Digitizing of mold tools on site

Using ‘state of the art’ software we can inspect your parts, tools and fixture against either CAD data or blue print or provide an CAD model in the aplication of reverse engineering.

For customers that own an their arm portable CMM arm, DMI can provide highly experienced operators/programmers to either operate your arm or to create turn key programs for you at a reduced hourly rate.

Surface Roughness & Surface Finish Analysis

Zeiss TSK Surfcom Profilometer

Dimensional Measurement, Inc. (DMI) offers A2LA accredited Surface Roughness Measurement, Calibration (2D Surface Analysis) for your parts at our facility in Wixom, Michigan. Our ISO 17025 accredited certification includes surface analysis and testing, which can provide a valuable evaluation for warranty and product issues, such as:

  • Wear verification
  • Noise or mating part irregularities
  • Seal leaks

There are numerous different surface finish parameters that can be reported on your parts, some of the more common ones are:

                                            Ra        – Roughness Average
                                            Rz        – Average Maximum Height
Rt         – Maximum Height of the Surface
                                            Rv        – Maximum Valley Depth
                                            Rp        – Maximum Peak Height
                                            R Motif  – Motif Parameter

DMI’s proficiency with surface measurement allows us to accurately identify the problem at hand, apply standards, and utilize the proper equipment for surface analysis.  Resulting data can be displayed in a graphical report Surface Finish Report

Examples of the most popular standards used by DMI to measure surface roughness are:

ISO 4288 1997: Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) – Surface Texture: Profile method – Rules and procedures for the assessment of surface texture

ISO 3274 1996: Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) – Surface Texture: Profile method – Nominal characteristics of    contact (stylus) instruments

ISO 12085 1996: Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS) – Surface Texture: Profile method – Motif parameters*

*Motif parameters are typically used by French based organizations

DMI can help you make sense of your surface roughness measurement requirements, provide the proper means of surface analysis, and establish the correct parameters necessary to help you qualify sensitive details of your part’s performance.

Video Metrology

DMI offers contact Video Metrology to its customers and has operates full CNC Video Metrology Equipment.

What is video metrology? A video measurement system is a machine that optically magnifies the image of a part captured by a camera and converted to a video signal that’s analyzed by electronics and software to determine edges and features. The relationships among edges and features in one magnified image are monitored and tracked for comparison to other imaged areas to provide dimensions across the measurement range of the system’s translation stages. High-resolution imaging over large areas or volumes without any part contact makes video measurement a popular technology for manufacturers of smaller parts in many industries.

X-Centric Video CMM

Video technology is also used for inspection. The same benefits of magnifying a part to better resolve detail apply to devices used for visual inspection. Such use isn’t really metrology, because the user subjectively analyzes the image, and nothing is measured. This use is more qualitative than quantitative. There is no universal definition of “video inspection,” and some people refer to “video inspection” when they mean “video measurement.”
